Supporting you

Well planned and well conducted therapy in neoplastic diseases involves not only radiotherapy or brachytherapy treatments. What matters to us is a holistic approach to treatment and to the patient combined with all aspects of his or her life. We realise that emotions, the attitude to the world and the way of thinking largely influence the patient’s health condition and, through that, the course of treatment.

Because of that, Amethyst centre provide support on a range of conditions that may influence the wellbeing of cancer patients and their families.

Nutritional support

Nutrition during cancer treatment is essential for maintaining the health and minimizing the side effects of cancer treatments, whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Proper nutrition before, during, and after treatment can help the cancer patient feel better and be more resistant. During radiation therapy or chemotherapy, problems with food intake are common. Food may taste bland, appetite may stop and problems with swallowing and eating may arise. Rapid body weight loss will drain your ability to fight cancer and increase the risk of complications such as infections, which may comprise longer hospital stays.

Because of that, Amethyst Radiotherapy Centres undertake comprehensive activities to provide dietary care and advice to all their patients. This includes regular monitoring of weight and BMI indices, as well as regular interviews during monitoring consultations.

At the Amethyst Radiotherapy Centre, our physicians are trying to assist each patient in choosing a proper diet: they will understand the patient’s eating habits and recommend the best diet to follow during and after cancer treatment. Our physicians place a great emphasis on nutrition in the fight against cancer by focusing on maintaining the immune system as strong as possible and at the same time by managing as best they can the side effects of treatment.

Amethyst clinics make available to all patients the possibility to engage in consultations with nutritionists and dieticians and our doctors are always ready to provide full nutritional information.

Psychological support

The first diagnosis, the words: neoplasm, cancer, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, may generate anxiety just with their very sound. To many patients, contact with a clinic or a hospital, the need to go through a number of tests and, ultimately, facing the hardship of cancer involves fear and tension they often cannot cope with.

The initial shock may give birth to various emotions and feelings, from depression and sadness to fear, anger and fury. These emotions can affect both patients and their families, and have important impacts on their wellbeing and on the effectiveness of treatments. Conditions that may result from these emotional shocks may include sleep and appetite disorders, apathy or depression.

Being such a dreaded disease, the psychological impact of cancer diagnoses influences the very evolution of the disease. From receiving the diagnosis, continuing with treatment and monitoring health status, the doctor becomes one of the key people alongside each patient. That is why, within the Amethyst clinic, psychological counselling, open communication and full information within the doctor-patient relationship are central values of the healing process.

At Amethyst Radiotherapy Centres, the support of a psychologist may take the form of individual meetings with the patient, meetings with the whole family, or group therapy.  Through psychological counselling, Amethyst aims to provide personalized support and strategies for adapting patients and their caregivers to managing an oncological condition. These strategies aim to understand and accept the difficulties they are going through and provide useful tools to overcome states such as depression, need for isolation, stress, anxiety, alteration of self-image, fatigue, changes and uncertainty, reduced concentration ability or worries caused by this disease.
